2015-2016 Schedule

Meeting # 1:
Speaker:

Web:

Charlie Bilello
Director of Research - Pension Partners LLC

http://www.pensionpartners.com
Date: September 15, 2015
Time: 7:00 p.m. (Registration 6:30)
Duration: 2 hours +/-
Location: Crowne Plaza
Topic: Generating Alpha: Predicting Stock Volatility and Corrections

Charlie Bilello, CMT, and Michael A. Gayed, CFA, of Pension Partners, LLC co-authored two award-winning papers in 2014 that challenge the efficient market hypothesis by revealing market anomalies that have persisted over time. In separate papers, they focus on the utilities sector and Treasury bonds, providing a systematic way to outperform the market on an absolute and risk-adjusted basis. Importantly, they also show how the unique behavior of utilities and Treasuries can be used to anticipate periods of higher volatility and market corrections. Their work has important implications for both asset allocators and active managers.

Join Charlie Bilello, CMT, co-author of these papers as he presents their research and provides practical ways of active tactical asset allocation using the signaling power of Utilities and Treasuries.

Charlie Bilello, winner of the 2014 Charles H. Dow Award and 3rd Place Winner of the 2014 Wagner Award, is the Director of Research at Pension Partners, LLC.  Mr. Bilello is responsible for strategy development, investment research and communicating the firm’s investment themes and portfolio positioning to clients.  Prior to joining Pension Partners, he was the Managing Member of Momentum Global Advisors, an institutional investment research firm. Previously, Mr. Bilello held positions as an Equity and Hedge Fund Analyst at billion dollar alternative investment firms, giving him unique insights into portfolio construction and asset allocation.

Mr. Bilello holds a J.D. and M.B.A. in Finance and Accounting from Fordham University and a B.A. in Economics from Binghamton University. He is a Chartered Market Technician (CMT) and a Member of the Market Technicians Association. Mr. Bilello also holds the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate.

Richard has been in the investment business since 1970. He founded Fruth Investment Management in 1992, and currently serves as President and Chief Investment Officer. Before starting his own company, Richard managed investments for clients and headed a brokerage office for Paine Webber. He previously served in a similar capacity with Drexel Burnham Lambert. Richard began his professional career at the Celanese Chemical Company and is a licensed Professional Engineer, earning a B.S. in chemical engineering from Michigan State University. He is a member of the Market Technicians Association and the American Association of Professional Technical Analysts.

The proprietary Fruth-Sentiment Indicator is used to help pinpoint important lows in the market that may indicate buying opportunities for selected companies.   The goal is to remove emotion from the buying and selling process and stay focused on long-term investment goals, buying when the market has peak pessimism.

Markets that overshoot on the upside also overshoot on the downside. The Fruth Sentiment-Indicator identifies scenarios in which we can identify those market bottoms that create excellent buying opportunities.

Used by Richard for over a quarter of a century as an integral part of his investment process, this method has proven to be a very reliable indicator of investor sentiment. Individual investors historically are most optimistic at the market tops and most pessimistic at the market bottoms.

Time: 7:00 p.m. (Registration 6:30)
Duration: 2 hours +/-
Location: Crowne Plaza

Dr. Williams has a degree in Economics (dual minors in Mathematics and Finance), a Masters of Business Administration, a Masters of Science in Economics (concentration in Econometrics), and a PhD in Finance from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Michael's specialization in his PhD program was financial market microstructure and the application of time-series financial econometrics to uncover market dynamics and interrelationships.

Relying on more than a decade of expertise in studying asset market pricing, dynamics, and efficiency, Dr. Williams helps traders unleash their quantitative edge through his revolutionary consulting firm, Williams Analytics LLC. Michael started Williams Analytics after seeing the massive disconnect between industry practices and the innovations actively being pursued in the academic literature. Capitalizing on this disconnect, Michael has modeled Williams Analytics as a full-service quantitative consulting firm dedicated to providing the latest, most rigorous advances in academia to non-academic market participants, all at a reasonable value.

Williams Analytics helps its clients monetize the gap between the latest breakthroughs in academic finance and current industry practice. It does this by sifting through reams of relatively-untapped advances in finance, economics, and statistics all to create one of a kind trading strategies and market forecasts.

In addition to his work at Williams Analytics, Dr. Williams is an assistant finance professor in the Chicagoland area and is active in publishing peer-reviewed articles on financial market microstructure, cross-market price discovery, market efficiency, and much more.
